abstract This marine multibeam and sidescan survey (2015_9_SNH) took place in three phases (25/11/2015 to 03/12/2015, 17-28/02/2016 and 04-17/04/2016) in the area off South and East coast of Arran on board the RV White Ribbon. The survey was carried out by the British Geological Survey (BGS) on behalf of Scottish Natural Heritage/MarineScotland. The aim of the survey was ensonification of 10 areas designated by SNH. Sea floor bathymetry data were collected using a Kongsberg EM3002D multibeam system and dual frequency Sidescan Sonar (100khz, 455khz). These data are archived by BGS. Technical details of the survey are contained in the BGS Report of Survey.

additional_info NAVIGATION: A Trimble SPS461 with precise DGPS corrections provided via a Fugro MarineStar license, which provides approximately 0.10m accuracy in horizontal and 0.15m in the vertical. A Kongsberg Seatex Seapath 200 combines GPS and an MRU to provide vessel heading and motion data plus a secondary position feed. Soundings were reduced to Chart Datum in CARIS Hips and Sips v9.1. All control is referred to the European Terrestrial Reference System 1989 using the GRS80 Ellipsoid. Grid and orthometric heights are given in terms of WGS 84 UTM Zone 30 and Chart Datum. MULTIBEAM: EM3002D is a dual-headed multibeam system capable of producing up to 508 dynamically focused beams; this produces a swath width of up to 200° operable in depths of up to 200 m. The system operates in the 300 kHz frequency range, which ensures narrow beams and a small acoustic footprint, and is also robust under conditions with high particle content in the water column. Kongsberg acquisition software, Seafloor Information System (SIS). All multibeam data was processed in CARIS HIPS and SIPS. Tidal reduction was performed predominantly using RTK height, however when this dropped out for boxes T1Plus and D5 the tide gauge at Millport was used. IHO Order 1a. BACKSCATTER data: ARCGRID; TIF images; XYZ. Fledermaus (.sd) available on request. SIDE SCAN SONAR: Equipment trials - Data not available. TIDE: The VORF model was used for the majority of this project; Areas D6 and T4 experienced RTK drop out, as such VORF could not be used here. In these areas data from the Millport tide gauge was used for tidal reductions. For more detailed information on the acquisition equipment and data collection techniques, operational standards, data processing methods and quality control procedures used on this survey see the Report of Survey
