abstract Ground truthing (GT) survey to provide data which would be used in conjunction with the existing multibeam echosounder (MBES) acoustic data (bathymetry and backscatter) to determine the presence and extent of broad scale habitats (BSH) and Habitat FOCI present within the SWDW rMCZ. A. These data are archived with the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network (MEDIN) Data Archive Centres (DACs) including the British Geological Survey (BGS) DAC for geology and geophysics, The Archive for Marine Species and Habitats Data (DASSH) and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) bathymetry DAC. The full site data package including raw is also available on request from BGS.

additional_info Each of the planned stations were sampled using a 0.1m2 mini Hamon grab in order to collect benthic sediment samples for particle size analysis and faunal community analyses (Figure 5). The majority of the stations were sampled using a 0.1m2 mini Hamon grab fitted with a video camera (HamCam). On recovery of the mini Hamon grab, the sediment sample was decanted into a suitable container. The whole sample was photographed and the volume measured and recorded. A representative sub-sample of sediment (approximately 0.5 litres) was taken for Particle Size Analysis (PSA). The remaining sediment was then sieved over a sieve table consisting of a 5mm screening mesh and 1mm collection sieve. Photographs were taken of the sediment retained on both the 1mm and 5mm fractions. The retained 5mm and 1mm fractions were then combined and fixed using a 4% buffered formalin solution for transport back to the laboratory. For more detailed information on the acquisition equipment and data collection techniques, operational standards, data processing methods and quality control procedures used on this survey see the Report of Survey/Cruise Report and associated documentation where available. The information available may vary depending on the age of the survey. Data are checked and loaded to the BGS Coastal and Marine data management system following BGS marine data management procedures.
