abstract This marine geophysical survey has been carried out by British Geological Survey (BGS), the survey took place from the November to December 1974 in the firth of Forth on board the Quintail. The purpose was to establish two test ranges within the Firth of Forth for geophysical and geological survey equipment testing. Kirkcaldy Bay test range - shallow water. Isle of May test range - deep water. Sub-bottom seismic profiling data were collected using Pinger and Sparker. The Sparker data were recorded as paper records. Navigation Decca Main chain MK21 receiver, pattern 3B; magnetic compass and Seafarer radar. All lines were run using visual transits. Accuracy details contained in report. Lines 1 and 2 Edo Western Pinger system. Lines 3 to 8 low energy sparker (1000 joules). Kirkcaldy Bay test range - shallow water – consists a mile wide corridor centred on a line between Kircaldy Harbour Light and Fidra Light extending from close inshore at Kirkcaldy to approximately 2°57’W. Isle of May test range - deep water – consists a corridor centred on a line from Inchkeith Lighthouse to a position half a mile south of the Isle of May.
