"abstract":"This marine multibeam, geophysical and sampling survey took place from 3/07/15 - 3/08/15 in the area East of Shetland, North Sea and Minch on board the RRS James Cook. The survey was the second of two cruises for the research project BRITICE CHRONO (PI Colm O'Cofaigh). Sediment coring was carried out by the British Geological Survey (BGS) on behalf of the BRITICE CHRONO Consortium. BRITICE CHRONO is funded and supported by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) as a consortium project. The aim of the survey was a large vibrocoring effort to constrain the timing and retreat dynamics of the British Irish Ice Sheet. Sea floor bathymetry data were collected using a EM710 multibeam system. Sub bottom seismic profiling data were collected using an SBP120 sub-bottom profiler. Seabed samples were collected using the 6 m BGS vibrocorer and 12 m NMFSS Piston corer. Data are restricted to project partners for a 5 year moratorium period. Technical details of the survey are contained in the Cruise Report. \r\n",

"additional_info":"The EM710 multibeam system and SBP120 sub bottom profiler were run continuously throughout the cruise and only temporarily stopped during coring operations. The performance of both systems was very good. All vibrocores and piston cores were cut into 1 m long sections and were then run whole through a multi-sensor core logger (University of Leicester) to measure magnetic susceptibility, bulk density and p-wave velocity. They were then split and logged with information on sedimentary structures, colour, grain size, sorting, bedding contacts and macrofaunal content recorded. Measurement of sediment shear strength in kPa was recorded using a Torvane. Selected samples of marine carbonate were collected and stored for future submission for radiocarbon dating. From the southern North Sea selected core sections were also identified for OSL dating following the cruise.",
