Information for this survey is sourced from IGS report 69/3. Vessel – 110 foot. The ship was fitted with: Navigation - Decca Navigator MK 12 and sextants, Kelvin Hughes echosounder type MS26A Mk2 (15kHz) and ship-shore radio. Extra equipment fitted for geophysical work included Decca Hi-fix system, Kelvin Hughes transit sonar MS43 Mk1 (kHz) single channel towed to side of ship’s bow wave, an E.G. & G. sidescan sonar Mk 1 with Model 259 recorder and Model 268 tow fish, and an E.G. & G. sonar Boomer and Sparker system with Model 229 (5 kHz) Pinger probe set and Model 254 seismic recorder. Pinger gave penetration of up to ~40 ft. Boomer was used at 500 & 1000 joule on one day only as did not compare well with Sparker. The sparkarray source was used at 500, 1000 and 3000 Joule levels, and worked well, at high energy levels penetration at depths up to 1000 ft were achieved. They carried out 53 traverses. Although the results were acceptable the need to tow the hydrophone alongside the ship and not astern resulted in high noise levels which could not be filtered out and affected the record quality. Navigation fixing accuracy estimated at +/- 50 ft. For more detailed information on the acquisition equipment and data collection techniques, operational standards, data processing methods and quality control procedures used on this survey see the Report of Survey/Cruise Report and associated documentation where available. The information available may vary depending on the age of the survey. Data are checked and loaded to the BGS Coastal and Marine data management system following BGS marine data management procedures.

abstract |
This marine geophysical survey undertaken for research has been carried out by British Geological Survey (BGS) took place from February to March in the 1968 on board the Humber Conservancy Board survey ship E.P. Hutchinson. Surveys associated with this reserach 1968/7 and 1968/8. The purpose was to collect data as part of a study of the Humber Estuary sediment type distribution; geological structure of the superficial deposits; depths to rockhead beneath superficial deposits and structure of solid rocks. Sea floor data were collected using echosounder and Sidescan Sonar. Sub-bottom profiling data were collected using Pinger and Sparker. These data are archived by BGS. Technical details of the survey are contained in IGS report 69/3 (WB/MC/69/3). McQuillin, R. 1969. Cruise Report: Humber Investigations, 1968.
